The Complete End of Tenancy Cleaning Checklist

Moving out of a rented property is stressful enough without worrying about whether you'll get your deposit back. One of the most common reasons landlords make deductions is cleaning — and it's entirely avoidable with the right preparation.

This room-by-room checklist covers everything you need to tackle before handing back the keys.

Why End of Tenancy Cleaning Matters

Landlords and letting agents compare the property's condition against the check-in inventory. If the property isn't returned in the same (or better) condition, they're entitled to deduct from your deposit. A thorough clean is your best defence.

Key rule: The property doesn't need to be perfect — it needs to be as clean as it was when you moved in.

Kitchen

The kitchen is usually the most time-consuming room. Focus on:

  • Oven and hob: Remove all racks and trays, degrease thoroughly inside and out. This is where most tenants lose deposit money.
  • Extractor fan and filter: Wipe down the hood and soak the filter if removable.
  • Fridge and freezer: Defrost, clean all shelves and drawers, and leave the door open.
  • Cupboards and drawers: Wipe inside and out, remove any food debris.
  • Sink and taps: Descale and polish to remove limescale build-up.
  • Worktops and splashbacks: Degrease and disinfect all surfaces.
  • Dishwasher: Run an empty cycle with a cleaning tablet, wipe the door seal.

Bathroom

  • Descale the shower head, taps, and tiles
  • Scrub the toilet bowl, seat, and behind the cistern
  • Clean the bath or shower tray, removing any mould or soap scum
  • Wipe down mirrors and any glass panels
  • Clean the extractor fan cover
  • Mop the floor and clean the skirting boards

Living Room and Bedrooms

  • Vacuum all carpets thoroughly, including under furniture
  • Wipe down all skirting boards, door frames, and light switches
  • Clean windows inside (and outside if accessible)
  • Dust and wipe all surfaces, shelves, and wardrobes
  • Remove any marks from walls (a damp cloth often works for minor scuffs)
  • Clean inside wardrobes and drawers

Hallway and Stairs

  • Vacuum or mop floors
  • Wipe down banisters and handrails
  • Clean the front door inside and out
  • Check for cobwebs in corners and on light fittings

Throughout the Property

  • Replace any blown light bulbs
  • Remove all personal belongings (including from loft or garage if applicable)
  • Empty all bins and remove all rubbish
  • Clean all internal windows and window sills
  • Check for damp or mould and treat if necessary

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Forgetting the oven — it's the single most common reason for deposit deductions. Don't leave it until last when you're exhausted.

Skipping behind appliances — landlords and agents check behind the fridge and washing machine.

Leaving limescale — especially in hard water areas like Bristol, limescale on taps and showerheads is very noticeable.

Not cleaning the garden — if you have outdoor space, it needs to be tidy too.
